The Film Session - Florida Edition
NOBODY BEATS US 32 TIMES IN A ROW!! NOBODY!!!!
What a GREAT day to be alive and be a WILDCAT! -Rich Brooks
Kentucky finally ended the 31-win streak against Florida and we have a lot of things to be happy about. I am going to do a weekly "Film Session" article where we look at the good and the bad from the Offense, Defense, and Special Teams in our most recent game. This week, we take a look at how we faired against Florida.
Going in to the week, the BBN Chalk Talk guys noted a few things in our Thursday Walk Thru Podcast that the Cats had to get done in order to win this game:
Get Pressure on the QB ✅(4 QB hits early, 2 sacks, pressure throughout game)
Secondary had to play well ✅(1 INT, 6 Pass Breakups, Darius West and Mike Edwards were 2 of our top tacklers)
Run the ball ✅(308 rushing yards)
Control the Line of Scrimmage ✅(UK - 308 rushing yds, UF - 148 rushing yds, UK - no sacks allowed, 5 yards lost total)
Overall streak enders and records
ENDED 31 GAME STREAK!
UKs first win in Gainesville since 1979
UKs first win over a ranked UF team in Gainesville
UKs first win over a ranked UF team since 1976 (ranked 15th then)
UK 2-0 for 2nd straight season and 4th in the last 5 years
2nd straight year with SEC opener win (first time since 06-07)
Won SEC road opener for 2nd straight season (first time since 83-84)
First win over ranked opponent since winning at #11 Lou in 2016
UKs first win over ranked SEC opponent sine 2015 vs #25 Mizzou
UKs first road win over ranked SEC opponent since 1998 vs #21 LSU
The Offensive Line played unbelievable for the second straight week - 308 rushing yds, ZERO sacks allowed, only 5 Tackles for Loss (TFL) on 41 rushing attempts, and only 5 yards total lost. These guys continue to look for work and stay active every snap!
Lynn Bowden came to play! Bowden ended up with 112 all-purpose yards (79 receiving, 33 KR yards) and scored his first career TD in Blue and White on the 54-yard bomb thrown by Terry Wilson.
Terry Wilson's overall play (minus the 2 turnovers). He looked comfortable in the pocket and ran when he needed to. Used his athleticism to escape and to make plays. A lot of improvement from game 1! Terry ended the game with 11 for 16 passing for 151 yards, 2 TD passes, 107 rushing yards on 10 attempts (over 10 yds a carry for you non-math people), 1 rush TD, 1 INT, 1 Fumble lost.
Terry is the first UK QB to rush for 100 yds in a game since Jalen Whitlow did vs. Alabama State in 2013
Terry is the first UK QB to pass AND rush for 100 yds in a single game since that same game for Whitlow.
Benny Snell. Wow, what a weapon to have! He was so patient and hit the holes hard, trucking, scratching, and fighting for every yard he could get. Snell's most memorable play to me was the final offensive drive where we ran Wildcat in to a Florida defense that stacked almost 11 in the box every play. Bunchy Stallings pulled and DESTROYED a DB that led Benny to scoot around the left side and get a first down to where they could drain a lot of the clock.
Snell now has 2,724 career rushing yards which moves him to 5th on the UK career list.
Snell had his 14th 100-yard rushing game and moved in to 2nd on that school list.
Other stats: Cats went 9 for 13 on 3rd down plays (a couple of those failed attempts were on the final drives trying to milk the clock), 41 rushing attempts for 7.4 yards per carry average, and we controlled the clock 31 minutes to 28 minutes
Turnovers. Terry Wilson had a fumble lost and an interception, which now makes 6 total turnovers on the year and 5 alone for Terry. You take the good with the bad right now for TW, but hope he can keep control of the ball moving forward.
Penalties. UK had 12 penalties accepted for 114 yds. The Offense had 5 penalties (one declined) totaling 30 yards. Cats had two holdings, an illegal formation, a false start, and a delay of game (took it on purpose). Easy things to fix!
Coaches had to burn a timeout early in the first quarter after a kickoff to avoid a delay of game.
Got hits early on Feliepe Franks. Overall, the defese had 2 sacks, 4 TFLs, 1 Forced Fumble w/ recovery, 1 INT, 6 Pass BreakUps, and 4 QB Hurries. This defense kept the pressure on throughout most of the game which frustrated Franks early and often.
Kash Daniels - 11 Tackles, 1 TFL. He leads the SEC in tackles so far after 2 weeks (22 total)! He was an animal out there getting hits in on anyone he didn't tackle. He is playing like a monster right now.
The Defensive Line. Even with Quinton Bohanna going down with an injury on the first Florida drive, the DL stepped up and continued to clog the middle and make things uncomfortable for this Florida offense.
The Secondary did their jobs and had West and Edwards as 2 of the leading tacklers. West had an interception and the entire secondary played great man-to-man coverage. They ran step-for-step with the Florida receivers.
All 3 of Florida's scores came from within the RedZone. Some may look at this as a negative, but what it tells me is that we aren't giving up the big plays. The Cats made Florida earn everything they got!
Josh Allen and his sack fumble to end the game! What a play and what an animal!!!
Held Florida to only 148 rushing yards.
Struggled in 3rd Down Defense. At one point, Florida was 6 for 9 on 3rd downs. They ended 7 for 13, but a lot of those misses were late. Cats need to be able to get out of trouble on 3rd downs.
Penalties. UK had 12 penalties accepted for 114 yds. The Defense had 6 penalties totaling 65 yards. UK had two offsides, two facemasks, one holding, and a pass interference.
The defense played soft in the 4th Quarter and looked like the play calling was more trying not to lose. A lot of gaps in the defense and easy movement by the Florida Offense.
Zone coverage - need to stick with man-to-man. The Linebackers don't seem like they quite know how to cover the middle on pass plays yet. Jordan Jones and Kash Daniels got lost a couple of times on who was covering the receiver and gave up two big plays.
The DBs hands. There were at least two balls right in the DBs hands that were dropped.
Max Duffy. He is the best punter UK has had in a looooooong time and he continues to flip the field and pin other teams back. He had 4 punts for 157 yds (39 yd avg) and 2 that he pinned inside the 5 yard line.
The Cats didn't need Miles Butler to kick any FGs. He made all 3 extra points.
The officials called a Florida FG no good when everything looked good on the TV. But hey, who are we to say he was wrong? I mean, he was right under the goalpost. Maybe a little payback for the clock hitting zero a couple of years ago???
One punt coverage. As Max Godby says, "Punting is 90% the kick, 10% the coverage". There was a 25 yard return after lost assignments and containment. That ensuing drive led to a UF TD.
even though UK didn't need him, we didn't get to see what Miles Butler can do for the 2nd week in a row. One of these games, UK will need him and fans won't know what to expect!
Max Godby's Unsung Hero Award - Bunch Stallings
Coach Lile's Lineman of the Week Award - Logan Stenburg
Matt Smith's Play of the Game - Terry Wilson 54-yd TD pass to Lynn Bowden
