The Film Session - Murray State Edition
I am going to do a weekly "Film Session" article where we look at the good and the bad from the Offense, Defense, and Special Teams in our most recent game. This week, we take a look at how we faired against Murray State.
Going in to the week, the BBN Chalk Talk guys noted a few things in our Thursday Walk Thru Podcast that the Cats had to get done in order to win this game:
The Run Game - identity of the Offense (43 att, 245 yds, 5.7 avg, 4 TDs)
Set tempo early and play with energy (91-yd drive to start, had times of complacency)
Work on the passing game (24/31, 283yds, 7.1 avg, 2 TDs)
No Hangover! Come out sharp and ready to play
UK moves to 3-0 for the second straight season. That is the first time that has been accomplished since the 2007-08 seasons.
UK has won eight of its last nine regular-season non-conference games.
UK is 11-3 in its last 14 home games.
UK is 12-5 in its last 17 regular season games.
UK is 20-5 in September over the last five seasons.
With UK scoring 48 points today, the Wildcats have scored at least 38 points in one game for 22 consecutive seasons, since 1997. It is the second-longest such streak in the SEC.
LSU has a longer streak, since 1993, but has not scored 38 in a game so far this season.
The opening drive! UK took the opening kickoff of the game and drove 91 yards for a touchdown. It was the second game in a row that the Wildcats had a 91-yard TD drive on their first possession of the game.
Scoring on almost every possession. The Cats scored on 8 of 9 offensive drives.
3 QBs played and all 3 scored a TD! UK completed 77.4 percent of its passes, 24 of 31, the best completion percentage in a game (min. 30 attempts) since 1999 at Indiana.
Six offensive players scored touchdowns. First time that has happened since the Kent State game in 2012.
1st Down Efficiency. OC Eddie Gran always talks about how, as a coaching staff, they can tell how well they are doing by their 1st down efficiency (4yds +). Here are the stats:
21/35 on first downs of 4+yds (60%)
The EMERGENCE of Christopher Rodriguez (aka Baby Snell)!!! He only had 2 carries but it was a hard fought and powerful 43 yds.
Benny Snell's QBR! Benny entered 1 pass to the stat line for 43yds and a TD on the double reverse to Zy'Aire Hughes. His QBR rating after the game landed at 791.2! That should add to his Heisman campaign.
WR swing passes & the option pitch sweep plays are becoming bread and butter plays for this offense.
NO TURNOVERS!! Although two fumbles occurred, the Cats were able to recover both.
Offensive Line play. The big boys up front were not creating the holes like they normally do. They got the job done, but it wasn't what we have been used to seeing from this group.
Third Down Conversions (6/12 - 50%). While 50% isn't all that bad, it was the 3rd & Long situations that hurt. The Cats had seven 3rd downs that were 10+yds (converted 2) - yardages of 13, 23, 18, 26, 17* (TW scramble for 1st), 10, 13* (MSU penalty for 1st).
Looked slow for part of the 2nd Q and most of the 3rd Q. Not going to fly against Miss St.
UK has allowed 917 total yards this season, fewest in the first three games since 2010 (773 that year).
Two scores the entire game. Although everyone would have liked to see a shutout, this was a great effort by the Defense for most of the game. UK has allowed zero points in the third quarter this season, first time to do that in the first three games since 1991.
Run and pass defense on the edges. Guys were flying to the ball on outside runs and pass plays to the sideline.
Jordan Jones was an animal in pass defense. While he only had 2 tackles, he had a career-high of 4 pass breakups.
Jamin Davis (#44 RS Freshman LB) had 4 tackles and got his first career interception, plus he added one pass breakup
DeAndre Square (#45 Freshman LB) had 2 tackles but was all over the field. I like the way the future looks for this linebacker corp.
Marquan McCall (#50 Freshman NG) had 3 tackles, 1 QB sack, and caused a fumble.
Didn't give up anything deep. This is important because it has been such a problem for the UK defense historically.
Not a lot of QB pressure. Murray did a great job of throwing short passes and using motion to keep the Cats moving, but UK only sent one extra defender every now and then to get in to the backfield.
Penalties. Again, Westry finds himself climbing up a WR's back and gets flagged for a Pass Interference call. Mike Edwards had a PI as well and Davoan Hawkins added 5 more for an offsides. Need to play a clean game against Miss St.
Senior kicker Miles Butler had his first field goal attempts of the season and converted from 40 and 38 yards. He has made all 14 extra points this season.
We didn't get to see the Aussie punt the ball besides 1 time. That is good thing, we just like to watch him BOOM the ball!
Max Godby's Unsung Hero Award
Coach Lile's Lineman of the Week Award
Matt Smith's Play of the Game
Double Reverse to Zy'Aire Hughes for 43 yards
