The Football Film Session - Georgia Edition

I am going to do a weekly "Film Session" article where we look at the good and the bad from the Offense, Defense, and Special Teams in our most recent game. This week, we take a look at how we faired against Mississippi State.

Going in to the week, the BBN Chalk Talk guys noted a few things in our Thursday Walk Thru Podcast that the Cats had to get done in order to win this game:

  1. Finding a Sustainable Passing Game

  2. Stay on track with your game plan

  3. Be hungry and fight for the win

While two of these 3 were true, in the end the Cats took home the victory. Let's take a look at why:

  • This was the most points Kentucky has allowed this season. However, this is the first time since the 1993 season that UK has allowed 34 points or less in each of the first nine games.

  • UK has allowed 138 points this season, fewest in the first nine games of a season since 1987 (136).

  • This was the most yards Kentucky has allowed this season. However, this is the first time since 1989 that UK has allowed 444 yards or less in the first nine games.

  • UK allowed 113 yards passing tonight, fewest against a top 10-ranked team since Alabama in 2008.

  • Nine different players caught passes for UK, most in an SEC game this season.

The Good

  • Terry Wilson completed 23 of 29 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown.

  • He completed 79.3 percent of his passes, the highest percentage for a UK quarterback with at least 25 attempts since Patrick Towles vs. Missouri in 2015.

  • Has completed at least 70 percent of his passes in consecutive SEC games, the first UK player to do so since Mike Hartline in 2010.

  • It was a UK quarterback’s best completion percentage against a top-10 team since Mike Hartline vs. Auburn in 2010.

  • Has five SEC games with at least 65 percent completions, first UK quarterback to do so since Andre’ Woodson in 2006.

  • Benny Snell eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark becoming the first player in school history with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. He also became the third player in SEC history to have 1,000 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs in each of his first three seasons, joining Georgia's Herschel Walker (1980-82) and Darren McFadden (2005-07) of Arkansas. Snell moves in to the No. 20 spot for SECs all-time leading rushers.

  • Lynn Bowden led the Wildcats’ pass receiving with six catches for 52 yards.

  • After catching 13 passes last week, he has 19 in the last two games, best for a UK receiver in a two-game stretch since Matt Roark had 20 catches vs. Mississippi State and Ole Miss in 2011.

  • Ahmad Wagner is now 3 for 3 on drawing a pass interference call when a ball is thrown his way. That's an average of 15 yards per attempted catch!

  • The fight by the offense to get back within 14 points with 9 minutes left in the game. Just didn't have enough down the stretch.

  • The hurry up offense. Granted it has been in extreme situations, but the offense looks comfortable while moving quickly.

The Bad

  • Missed opportunities and drive killers

  • 2nd UK offensive drive in Q1: Terry taking a sack on 3rd & 5 - offense went from UGA 43 to UK 49 and 4th & 13. IMO would have been 4 down territory down 7-0.

  • 3rd UK offensive drive in Q1: Missed shot to Lynn Bowden in the 1st Q when down 7-0

  • Two minutes left in Q1: Conrad fumble on the UGA 33 (Stenburg flagged for personal foul, put UGA around the 50).

  • Offensive possession ending in FG: Was 3rd & 4 from 6 yd line, false start, 3rd & 9, sacked for 5 yd loss (brought double A gap blitz).

  • Is Benny being too patient in his running? I thought Benny needed to hit the holes a little harder. When playing against the big boys, you can't afford to get grabbed and tackled with no momentum going forward.

  • The Wildcat with no motion. The defense knows exactly what is coming and it is not working.

The Good

  • Mike Edwards led the UK defensive effort with 11 tackles, his first double-figure game of the season and 10th of his career. Edwards is seven tackles from 300 stops in his career.

  • Davonte Robinson had a career-high nine tackles, including a two-yard tackle for loss.

  • Jordan Jones had nine tackles, including one-half tackle for loss.

  • Josh Allen had three tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries. The two recoveries are the first of his career.

  • Defending the pass. The Cats defense held Jake Fromm to 14/20 for 113 yards.

The Bad

  • 331 rushing yards given up. Not only is that a season-high for Georgia's offense, DeAndre Swift had a CAREER-HIGH of 156 yards for 2 TD and Elijah Holyfield had a CAREER-HIGH for 115 yards and a TD. Unacceptable against this defense. This is supposed to be one of the best defenses in the country and you can't let teams get career or season highs against you in anything.

  • Even though the defense got two turnovers, they were both self-inflicted by UGA. There was a bad snap with UGA on the UK 26 yd line and then a QB/RB exchange fumble on the UK 27. Both of those could have and should have turned in to points for Georgia.

  • UGA racked up 228 of their 444 total yards on 2nd down plays. That is over HALF of their yardage. On 2nd downs!!!

  • Defense was finally showed that they are human.

Special Teams

The Good

  • Max Duffy punting besides his first one. He averaged 48.5 yards and had a long of 56.

  • Chance Poore making FGs look easy. He seems to be the kicker of the future, an Austin McGinnis 2.0 if you will. I am excited about him in the program for a few years.

The Bad

  • The first punt kicked directly to Mecole Hardman and the poor coverage which allowed Hardman to return the ball 65 yards and put UGA on the 23 yard line for their first TD.

  • UGA only punted the ball 1 time the entire game.
